Weapon spec for fighters

They lack damage, so they would need something. The good old weapon specialization could be a thing for them. They could choose a group of weapons and get the proficiency bonus as damage when using them. This would make them to deal mediocre, but sustainable damage, the opposite of the burst damage of paladins.

Weapon categories could be:

-One handed except Finesse weapons.

-Two handed

-Finesse weapons

-Swords, 1h-2h, scimitars but not the rapier and not the dagger

-Axes, 1h-2h

-Bludgeoning weapons, 1h-2h

-Bows

-Crossbows

Maybe the whole class could get it, but I don't know if this idea is balanced or not, I didn't try it.

maybe as a home-brew fighter class but making changes to core mechanics would start making this game not 5e

This is not 5e, this is 5e SRD. Do you know the difference?

Fighters, especially battle masters are capable fighters in 5e.

Maybe add something like the Hobgoblin's Martial Advantage ability as a feat but reduce the damage to +1d6?

Martial Advantage. Once per turn, the hobgoblin can deal an extra 7 (2d6) damage to a creature it hits with a weapon attack if that creature is within 5 feet of an ally of the hobgoblin that isn't incapacitated.

The fighter is proven to be the highest DPS class in 5E D&D.
In this game you are likely playing as a rest junkie.  This could be fixed by introducing wandering encounters while in adventure areas, not just while in travel mode.

Maybe at very high levels or in limited burst. In actual usefulness, they tend to fall short as martial characters compared to Barbarians and Paladins. Even Rangers have a lot of good things going for them that Fighters can't realistically outperform until very high levels through spellcasting.

This is true multiple times over in Solasta, since Barbarians, Paladins and Rangers have really good subclasses like Path of the Stone, the Claw, every Paladin Oath and the Swift Blade Ranger. The Fighter, contrarily, does not have good subclasses. The Spellblade is about as good as it gets and it overlaps a lot of spells with Rangers.

Let's fix that: the fighter is proven to be the highest DPS class provided the following are all met:

1/ high number of encounters and extreme lack of rests so non-resource DPS is extra important.

2/ the Fighter miraculously lives through everything / is never threatened by anything.

3/ enemies have low AC and no special evasion features (for melee) or arrow deflecting features (ranged) OR Fighter has allies babysitting him to set up advantage consistently, so he can hope using the -5/+10 feature from a GWM/Sharpshooter feat often enough to make it worth.

4/ magic weapons are common enough that Fighter can get whatever suits him.

Point 1 is very DM-dependent, and in Solasta context entirely up to player to follow a narrative approach and not spam rests.

Point 2 is very DM-dependent and in practice in any tough fight a Fighter that focuses on attack can only live through because other people babysit him with healing spells (although Second Wind is definitely more useful than it looks at first glance).

Point 3 is very variable but you can reasonably consider that once level 5 you are accurate enough against AC 12 to start using the highriskreward feature if you have advantage, by level 10 you can start using it against AC 15 with advantage, AC 12 without.

Point 4 is extremely DM-dependent, in Solasta at least it's validated considering how easy it is to get (melee) weapons.
