Weapon spec for fighters

They lack damage, so they would need something. The good old weapon specialization could be a thing for them. They could choose a group of weapons and get the proficiency bonus as damage when using them. This would make them to deal mediocre, but sustainable damage, the opposite of the burst damage of paladins.

Weapon categories could be:

-One handed except Finesse weapons.

-Two handed

-Finesse weapons

-Swords, 1h-2h, scimitars but not the rapier and not the dagger

-Axes, 1h-2h

-Bludgeoning weapons, 1h-2h



Maybe the whole class could get it, but I don't know if this idea is balanced or not, I didn't try it.

maybe as a home-brew fighter class but making changes to core mechanics would start making this game not 5e

This is not 5e, this is 5e SRD. Do you know the difference?

Fighters, especially battle masters are capable fighters in 5e.

Maybe add something like the Hobgoblin's Martial Advantage ability as a feat but reduce the damage to +1d6?

Martial Advantage. Once per turn, the hobgoblin can deal an extra 7 (2d6) damage to a creature it hits with a weapon attack if that creature is within 5 feet of an ally of the hobgoblin that isn't incapacitated.
