Traveling (regional map) : trick/suggestion [encounter maps] so player can cast spells

EDIT / UPDATE : the Winter Update (Dec. 2020) added, in the Travelling settings in-game, the option to cast the spells Goodberries and/or Create Food and Water before a Long Rest and your party will eat those instead of Rations.  My suggestion was a bit different (enter campsite during travelling to cast any spell like Mage Armor), but close enough.

Some players have mentioned they would like to be able to cast, while travelling, spells like Goodberries, Create Food or even Mage Armor.

Technical suggestion : during a long rest, allow player to manually enter a "random encounters map" and cast spells before and after clicking on the campfire.
The reason I also mention after is for someone who would like to cast Mage Armor or other very long spells in case of a random encounter on the road ahead.
(manually exiting map after)

Of course, my idea is that it is a system / assets already in-game.  The Long Rest screen would have a "Enter Campsite" button

Comment on survival : as a DM, I myself hate the Create food and water spell as it makes the survival mechanics much less gritty or almost void (you can feed 15 people with 1 spell slot!).  I radically modify the spell, to be a very different concept, where the party does a very short prayer (1 minute) and can be active much longer with what food and water they actually have, like being able to walk in a desert 8 hours with normal water consumption.  And/or Advantage on Constitution or Survival checks related to hunger/thirst/fatigue.

And then there are Goodberries : no need to hunt, no fear for survival at all, as the whole party can be fully sustained for a day with a few goodberries and still have some left for tiny heals.

I know, I know, many commenters respond by mentioning it is high fantasy, magic ... as if high-fantasy stories and movies just have their heroes summon magical food/water without any issues or survival challenges.  Anyway, DMs, and Solasta can adapt those spells to their world/universe.  Otherwise, rations are somewhat not necessary BUT, on the other hand, maybe that is fine as the player would need to micro-manage casting spells at the campsite to bypass the need for rations and all its weight issues.  Then, of course, players would whine about this being a hassle and request a quick casting method (less spell slots during random encounters though, which is really not a significant downside).

PS : I finished the game and posted all my bug reports already on these forums.

I was all excited to travel back to the main city :(  With my 10 Goodberries and rations !

I took 38 hours : I play slowly and search/loot everything.  I typically take X2 to X3 longer than faster players to finish games.

Dunno, I want good survival mechanics, but i don't want to throw away rules to get them. I don't regularly play with rangers, so without druids as an option that usually dumps goodberry as an option. add in create rations is a fifth level spell? most early level characters are making multiple trips to truly plot a dungeon if they don't bring excessive rations to begin with.

So ultimately, in SRD, it meant less money spent on the original trivial price of 5 silver a day once you were powerful enough and didn't mind expending a spell slot known and memorized to use it (only really a problem for clerics with access to lightning bolt and fireball, imo).

Here, rations cost four times as much, which implies that the good food is even more expensive in town.

In a lot of ways, this just means that services from scavengers need to be more cohesive and they're charging food plus wages for their time. Plus they should be able to return to places and actually scavenge/excavate places you've cleared out. Maybe even finding more levels for you to return to and clear out.

I don't have the answer, but there's always another way to look at the problem and find a reasonable fix for it.

Hello,

Create Food and Water is level 3 (divine), so you are correct that it burns a Spell slot III, which is a big deal, though during a random encounter you are rather full of slots (minus a 3rd slot if you did that spell before travelling that day).  I still hate that spell :P

It is true that Goodberries requires a Ranger or a Greenmage in Solasta.

Personally, just having a party member with good Survival checks allowed me to do the longer bit of 10 days without much issues (otherwise you need 40 rations!).

I honestly don't know what the penalties are for not having food on any given day of a journey, but because I couldn't cancel a trip once it started I very nearly found out. I had only half the 40 rations needed for the trip to the castle and started it before I realized that. Quite literally and unintentionally relied on luck for the trip. Until they fix the ability to travel, I have no real reason to complain about those two spells and might even make sure i have either a ranger or greenmage on hand at all times until it's resolved.

Someone else on the forum also suggested an option to stop a travel and change direction.

My suggestion here (before my comment about hating those food spells) is related to the concept of being able to cast spells during the travel. :P

Yeah, I'd prefer some kind of list of spells i can have the character auto-cast when they're standing still outside of combat. maybe even with a condition attached, not unlike that AI action trigger in the first dragon age.
