EDIT / UPDATE : the Winter Update (Dec. 2020) added, in the Travelling settings in-game, the option to cast the spells Goodberries and/or Create Food and Water before a Long Rest and your party will eat those instead of Rations. My suggestion was a bit different (enter campsite during travelling to cast any spell like Mage Armor), but close enough.
Some players have mentioned they would like to be able to cast, while travelling, spells like Goodberries, Create Food or even Mage Armor.
Technical suggestion : during a long rest, allow player to manually enter a "random encounters map" and cast spells before and after clicking on the campfire.
The reason I also mention after is for someone who would like to cast Mage Armor or other very long spells in case of a random encounter on the road ahead.
(manually exiting map after)
Of course, my idea is that it is a system / assets already in-game. The Long Rest screen would have a "Enter Campsite" button.

Comment on survival : as a DM, I myself hate the Create food and water spell as it makes the survival mechanics much less gritty or almost void (you can feed 15 people with 1 spell slot!). I radically modify the spell, to be a very different concept, where the party does a very short prayer (1 minute) and can be active much longer with what food and water they actually have, like being able to walk in a desert 8 hours with normal water consumption. And/or Advantage on Constitution or Survival checks related to hunger/thirst/fatigue.
And then there are Goodberries : no need to hunt, no fear for survival at all, as the whole party can be fully sustained for a day with a few goodberries and still have some left for tiny heals.
I know, I know, many commenters respond by mentioning it is high fantasy, magic ... as if high-fantasy stories and movies just have their heroes summon magical food/water without any issues or survival challenges. Anyway, DMs, and Solasta can adapt those spells to their world/universe. Otherwise, rations are somewhat not necessary BUT, on the other hand, maybe that is fine as the player would need to micro-manage casting spells at the campsite to bypass the need for rations and all its weight issues. Then, of course, players would whine about this being a hassle and request a quick casting method (less spell slots during random encounters though, which is really not a significant downside).
