Stuck on the charachter selection screen; cannot return to main screen

When I go to New Campaign and I'm at the character selection screen, if I hit esc and then esc again when the confirmation box comes up, it stays on the character selection screen and there will be no further confirmation boxes or the ability to press back either, or select any other menu option. You can chose a character and also create a new one through that, but if you go create one you can't cancel or go back from that either.
