Selecting characters past level 1 for created dungeons

I made a dungeon for around level 5 PCs and tested - which gave me a rando 1st level group. Who got TPK in the first encounter (as expected). I tried loading it up from the main screen planning on using my level 10 party I just finished the game with. However they show up for selection as their level 1 starting versions. I didn't select them anyway and see if it was a bug and I would get the level 10s.

Anyway - for those that have loaded other content can you select non level 1 characters and is it possible to test without getting a rando level 1 group?

Unfortunately that's not possible,

You have to hit the Play Button and Select your party, but then you don't get the Cheats feature in the menu.

So use the Default Play Test Party for a walk around in the module to make sure everything is in place, then do the actual playtest with the appropriately leveled party you select.

That's essentially my problem - my high level characters don't show up as options to select in normal play mode. Just their original starting versions. Do I have to be mid campaign rather than have finished to see my more than level one PCs?

Have you tried leveling up your original characters?  There is a level up button in the character screen in the main menu which you can click as many times as you wish.  I don't know if you can play with characters from existing campaigns as those characters are stored in their respective save files, but I suspect not.

There is one other possibility...

In the settings for the Module itself... did you make sure to set the minimum and maximum levels to 5th or higher?

If you still have them set to level one... then only level 1 characters will show up on the possible selections in the character vault.

i've not tried using the dungeon maker yet, but i was wondering this exact thing, can you level up characters in the character creator so you can run higher level party in your home-made dungeon?

The short answer is YES...

The complicated answer is... yes BUT... the Character level up button in the Character Vault only gives them the actual level, not the EXP to get to that level. So in short... the characters will have to gain ALL the exp for the levels up to that point.

So a 5th level character for example would have to gain all the EXP from 1st to 2nd, to 3rd, to 4th to 5th before their EXP bar will start showing Experience Points at 5th level.

ONLY an actual character that was leveled up in dungeon modules from level 1 and exported at the end of the adventure will keep their actual experience for the level they are at. The ones done in the Character Vault will essentially be 1st level exp characters with say 5th level abilities.

i just want to test out some of their higher level abilities, i assume that will be possible?

Yes that is possible,

They basically will be high level characters for all intents and purposes. Its just that their actual EXP will be set as if they were a 1st level character.

Just make a lvling dungeon.

On one map put small rooms with doors on each side and put a fight in each room with a camp and food to rest after each fight. start out with smaller fights with a handful of mobs at low lvls then when higher lvls add one higher lvl mob or a lot of really low lvl mobs. you can get to lvl 5 in about 30mins doing this. you can make the map as big or as small as you need to lvl fast.

maybe make a level appropriate AoE effect wide rooms with only a 5' access behind a door and fill it full with monsters.  put a tank in the access point and throw AoEs into the room

or even have large monsters in the room but 5' hallways so the 'heros' get advantage on their attacks while the foes get disadvantage, assuming TA has those rules implemented

Well I don't know what the EXP per mob is in reality so I can't specifically gauge how many mobs it would take.

In a general sense I am usually EXPing my characters up during the play tests of my modules before I release them. So I can test combat balance, gauge the exp gain per plot point/camp rest site, etc,.before I can release them.

So I can assure you that does work.
