Random Chance, not so random?

So... I was about 250XP shy of Level 3 andI decided to go between the main town and the first encounter site (the fort).  I come across a group of bandits going to the fort and I hit a group of bandits coming back to the town (same number of bandits, same location for the combat).

Well, I tend to use a standard operating procedure for my team and I did the encounter the same exact way.  When I did the same actions, i had the same exact attack roles???  I know this sounds weird and maybe everything happened the exact same way... BUT, I did another lap (between the Fort and the Town) again and it went down the same way. To be clear, I did not save the game at all during any of the fights - not until I finally exited the game after playing for for about an hour.

I could be seeing things, but short of logging the encounters, I really think the random number generator is following an identical path, with identical actions, when you have identical encounters (e.g., 4 bandits and 1 Highwayman @Crossroads).

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has seen the random encounters on the map yielding "odd" results.

The seed for the random number generator seems to be saved. So as long as you're doing exactly the same things, you get the same numbers. That is IMO a good thing since it discourages reloading until you get a good roll.

P.S.: You can disable this in the settings. "Preserve Random Seed"

I thought the "seed" would only trigger in the same exact encounter (which is what happens if you reload).

I didn't think if you happened to run into the "same exact encounter" (e.g., 4 bandits and 1 highwayman), but an hour later, without ever triggering/using a save, you would have the same rolls, if you perform the same actions?  That seems a bit odd, maybe working as intended, but odd.

Uh... sorry, I missed your reply. I misunderstood what you where writing... sorry.

What you experienced is indeed odd... Basically the random seed must somehow accidentially have repeated itself, which is possible, but the chances are extremely low - usually 1 in 4 billion if it is a 32 bit seed. A little bit higher, since they are making one random roll per day. But I guess it is still a 1 in a million shot...

No worries, the whole thing was odd.

I would agree, it is mathematically absurd to think a 32 bit seeds "repeats," which led me to the hypothesis that each "encounter type" (e.g. 4 brigands and 1 highwayman at crossroads) pre-gens in each game session and uses the same seed for that "type" of encounter.  I'm not sure the devs thought people would farm the same roadway multiple times in the same game (without saving or logging out of the game) and that is causing the perceived repetition... but in the end, it could just be "very similar" and I'm just playing too much Solasta!

When I have time, I will replicate and record to double-check.  Thanks!
