No rations, no adventure.

My friend and I have been playing since yesterday, and were looking forward to continuing our adventure today, because the game you have made is so much fun to us!

Unfortunately, our party cannot hope to reach our next destination on the map, because we are out of rations, and so is every store in Caer Cyflen, apparently. We barely made it back from our last adventure, having run out of food on the way and fighting monsters with our bare minimum cantrips and other at-will powers, because we were unable to take a long rest. There might be a chance to gather food while travelling or even looting rations from fallen enemies, but it is never enough to serve the whole party, and most of the time, we travel for several days without being able to find any food. Our adventure took several in-game weeks, and the store in the city was still not offering any more rations when we returned. We bought ten rations at the beginning of our journey, that was all we could ever get. Are they even restocking supplies?

Please consider changing this, food rations should be sold in bigger amounts and respawn more frequently. Regarding the fact that this is quite a large city, there should be more than one single shop that sells some rations. Maybe the tavern/inn should provide food and sell rations as well, in our opinion. (Yes, you could still take long rests for 10 gold in the inn, but that doesn't help a starving party in the middle of the Badlands...)

I agree with the general point but as a temporary fix if you travel slowly you seem to hunt more & find more rations than on normal or fast. On average it's about 4 per day ie enough though you can go hungry for a while or end up with a surplus.

You seem to be locked in to your speed and destination at the start of a journey which is not great.

I agree, my party left Caer Cyflen with 28 food, resting at the Inn restored 8 food on the only vendor, and we were out of food 3/4 of the way to Bone Keep. There is not an option to go anywhere else you have to go there. Can't do anything once your there because you have no food. Then there is the issue of no Revivify scrolls I looked and could not find any for sale in town so when you die, just 1 party member game over. Please add vendors or other quests to do along the way of these 2-week trips we have to take. Thank You.

Agree with the points made above. If rations will not be more readily available, it disincentivizes exploration for exploration's sake. That said, I'm given to understand that (1) quests will not have timers attached to them (a la the original Baldur's Gate games), so if there is a better chance of gathering food at a slow pace, that's an incentive; (2) traveling at a fast pace, while potentially incurring more random encounters (which, even so, generates additional sweet, sweet XP!), may help with stretching existing resources out; and (3) having a Ranger in the party practically guarantees gathering more food, in addition to preventing negative bonuses to traveling at faster paces.

Still, if a feature of the game in some way necessitates the inclusion of a particular class in your party to deal with a problem (in this case, rations management), it's not the best look. From what I have heard, the devs are actively engaged in tuning this issue and have already addressed adding additional rations to be looted/otherwise obtained in-game. Happy to hear that they are actively engaging our concerns!

Thank you for your answers on this topic so far! It is good to see we are not alone with this issue. Maybe, if enough people voice their concern, something can be done.

We did indeed have a ranger in our party while playing, and tried every available travel speed, but still our rations got depleted and we ended up without any rations after the third adventure, in Caer Cyflen where no vendor sold any more rations. So we cannot continue playing for now, because we are stuck, basically.

At least until this issue is fixed.

With a ranger in party I tried to reach the 3rd  travel point following a quest. I had 25 rations on hand after buying 10 from the vendor in the main city. I tried twice to get there on normal, and three times at slow speed. The only thing I haven't tried is fastest travel so I may yet give it another go.

No matter what I ended up at my destination with no rations left. I had even tried doing a quick save after each encounter I had and still could not get to the end with any food left. I  am currently inside  with one ration i have found and most of my abilities needing a long rest, which I cannot do unless you have 4 on you.

The same problem, I buy every ration and arrow available and I am running out. For arrows even when you pick up loot it is safe to say you don't collect half.

The ration problem is a problem. I have a Ranger and took a ton of rations only to barely have any at the Bone Castle. It would be nice to be able to queue up hunting and foraging for food. Traveling merchants could sell food. Interactions with NPCs could reveal trading posts or stops where food can be obtained. On the map, it would be nice to know what terrian I am traveling on. I see green but is it a forest? hills? mountain? grasslands?

I like the idea of possibly starving and having to survive in some manner. However, its not a wilderness survival game its a 5.1E tactical adventure game. The need for food makes having a Ranger useful and taking the survival skill. Mini games for hunting, fishing, and foraging for extra food would be interesting.

I don't understand the ration pack in general. Its a 1 day worth of food and weighs 3 lbs. Maybe that is 5.1E rules (I found 2 lbs). The food bought in town should be all dried, not as heavy, and not as good as a wild meal. Identifying wild plants to eat could be a way to gather food, or get really sick. Gathering food is not always possible in the wild but that is an opportunity to load up a special map and present a challenge, find the food or starve to death.

Managing things like food and ammo creates an excel spreadsheet feeling to a game instead of enjoying the game. Hopefully someday the party has horses to help haul all the rations.

After sleeping in the inn I found that rations would restock in the shops, so this might have been patched?

Also, I deffo feel like the food thing will come into effect when they implement exhaustion (like dnd 5e) which means there would be a need for rations.

As of right now, you can starve your party and as long as you don't want to take any long rests it's perfectly fine... even though it says you can complete your long rest.

I set off on a long journey without realizing I had insufficient food. (Even worse, I didn’t even know it was going to be a long journey, as it was the first “Crown Mission” to find the diamond. There was no dialogue/advice about where the mission would send us or how long it’d take; there was just the map destination to select when I started the journey.) Before a journey starts, please have the software compare journey time to food stock, and warn of a shortage.

It would have been very helpful to be able to change journey destination after one day so I could go back to buy more food. Or even better, be able to buy more food enroute.

A nice new feature would be to take a day off travel to go hunting, to ‘catch’ a random amount of food, and perhaps one or more random encounters.

Surprised this is a problem for people. My problem is that I get so many they create weight management issues... at least in the starting area around Caer Cyflyn, I get them faster than it's possible to eat them traveling at normal speed.

There is a bit of a bug with buying rations... one that can create infinite rations to purchase, mind...

When I sold a stack of 5 rations to a shop, it becomes available to purchase... and never runs out! If Ileave and return, it resets the count and I can only purchase it once. Until they balance the ration-gameplay, you can use this temporarily to at least have enough on-hand...

This may be a silly question but out of curiosity did your ranger have the Survival Skill? I suspect that may help in finding rations.

At the same time, I agree rations not respawning in town or not spawning quickly enough is bad for exploration. The shopkeepers should be fixed so they have as much as you want to buy, in my opinion.

I can confirm that this is a serious problem. I ALWAYS travel at the slow pace. Always, and I have both a ranger and cleric with survival skill trained. Yet on the way to the Bone Keep, I ended up using every last ration in my inventory including the rations my characters obtained while traveling. Which left me out in the wilderness with zero way to make the return journey. Or it would have, if it were not for the spell Goodberry (which actually doesn't work according to RAW, because the berries don't disappear after 24 hours - thank goodness!!). Without that spell I would have been stuck. As is, for those with the capability, the ranger spell Goodberry is a life saver. In fact, at this stage of the game, I'd say it's a downright necessity. The "good berries" that are created by the spell are counted as rations by the game, and, as I previously mentioned, they do not disappear after 24 hours per the PHB description. Since that is the case, you can cast the spell, even multiple times, and put (10 x spell slots) "rations" into your inventory, rinse and repeat as needed. I found myself casting Goodberry every time I hit a random encounter, but I'm guessing you could "interrupt" travel to cast the spell as well.

Just wanted to reiterate that without some kind of fix, the current ration/travel system is not sustainable in the long term. You'll have entire parties that get stuck in the middle of nowhere without rations. A possible fix would be to add in some kind of "hunting" system, where you could interrupt travel on purpose to do some hunting/fishing etc. Either that or just punch up the numbers for how often rations are discovered in the wild.

I have a ranger in the party and always travel fast, I have made the trip to and from the Bone keep several times and although things have gotten lean, I have never run out of food or starved.

I speculate that food found is tied to a daily survival check (boosted by ranger favoured terrain, not sure what the badlands counts as, I had mountains)
My ranger has a high wisdom though, maybe the solution is to lower the DC on the daily survival check to find food and/or increase the food found (maybe this is based on the extent to which the check DC is beaten?)

Cheers
