Found since returning to the game that magic missiles knock down bits of wall and block that I thought you were supposed to move by hand, anybody else noticed it.

That's actually very necessary at one or two points in the game, because certain movable objects cannot be reached to touch them.

If true then that is not consistent with the D&D 5e rules. The target of Magic Missile is "a creature of your choice that you can see within range" and range is 120 feet.
