Long rests in the wilderness have no benefits

2 weeks ago (edited)

I am new to the game.

Let's pause here and say I LOVE this game so far. It is the best adaptation of 5e so far (WOTC should give them full license to all lore, including Faerun).

BG3 is licensed and, game-play wise, is  the hybrid bastard child of 5E and DOS. Solasta has captured the essence of 5e tabletop with its hands tied behind its back...literally.

That being said, I have just trekked across the wilderness to my first potential gem site. I am ready to level but can't. I had multiple encounters during the trip, and every time I tried to hit the level up button it told me I had to take a long rest, No broblemo...lemee go click on the campfire and finish my "long rest". But notta...no option to heal, no option to level up, no option to set my active spell list....nothing.

By the time I reach the encounter my party is exhausted and close to death because they are unrested...they have taken 10 plus long rests over several days mind you and yet its like they never slept.

1. What am I doing wrong?

2. how do I abort travel...its like " I can't make this trip...time to go back to the city so I can rest and level up".

Ok so, I just started the game up. Thank goodness I can leave Dark Castle....heading back to town to level.

Perhaps you don’t have rations? Or Goodberry or Create Food spells prepared? IIRC, “long rest” with no rations provides no benefit. I think there might be a difficulty setting that removes the need for rations to long-rest as well.

Talked to The ranger...he is the eyes of the master and I still can't rest.

Reloaded and killed him...still can't rest.

Talked to the Dwarf (think I found some of his bones at the house)...still can't rest.

Tah Dahhhh! Found a campsite.

I traveled half way across the known world to kiss the dirt.

Thank-you for the response. I had enough rations for two rests...one pre-battle, and one after three waves in the castle courtyard. I killed three more waves for a total of six, and now I am out. In the wilderness it said I was hunting, making rations, shinning shoes....so I am not shure what was wrong (seeing as I clearly had rations).

Ok...back to town to now visit Publix.

P.S I killed the twelfth in a long line of Adams. He was almost polite and I just slew him :(. Does this make me a "Re-murder Hobbo"?

So I took your advice and made a custom difficulty that doesn't require food to rest. I didn't have to trek back to town, and 1 rest latter I leveled and can make food now with my cleric.

Very nice, glad that helped. Once you know what to expect there, it’s easy enough to keep enough rations on hand via the vendors, or take a Ranger or green mage for Goodberry, or buy food until your cleric can create it on the fly (if you wait long enough, your Paladin can create food, even!). In EA, rations were a real pain to come by, but they are plentiful enough on vendors now that it’s just a minor gold sink in the early game. I wouldn’t blame anyone that just said “forget it, not fun” and turned it off altogether, though.
