Is the whole game on rails?

Hi All,

Im not really looking for spoilers or anything like that.  Ive put about 3 hours into the game so far.  While I think its ok Im finding that it isnt really an RPG so much as a strategy game with occasional cut scenes.  My reason is that there doesnt seem to be any choice at all in the game, no alternate paths nothing.  Im in Caer Lem and so far it seems to be a repeating pattern of:

background story, walk a bit, fight a few battles, single long campsite - repeat

For those that have made it further in the game - does it eventually open up and become something where there are options to control choices and explore or does this continue throughout the first chapter?

I havent seen any side quests nor any kind of choices - just a single path through the story.

Im not really complaining so much as trying to understand if i should stop playing now.  If there is no control/plot options and they plan on forcing incompatibility with the game saves in the final i will likely hold off playing more until final release.

Thanks for any feedback.

it is E.A., and it will not be open world when completed, so linear, yeah.

Yeah, it’s EA so there are not so many options for different choices right now.

As for Caer Lem my party was able to peacefully negotiate with NPCs in castle courtyard and inside the castle - 4 NPC in total. You won’t get exp and other benefits compared to violence way of solving the quest but at least the first one will be changed according to feedback from developers.

I actually prefer linear games myself.. I get so bored in sandbox and stop playing.

It is 100% an rpg. Linear doesn't define the genre.

You should at least get more sidequests in the game so you don't have to follow only one quest chain all the time.

Also, a player stash in town could incentivize crafting more.

I would like to second player stash/bank. On a side note, got my first bag of holding on the 7th playthrough. Fun game, can't wait to see the finished product.

Did you spot the Side Quest in Caer Lem, follow the footsteps on the bend with the goblins, where could they lead? The game will open up over time and the devs have said there will be rewards in later builds for non combat solutions, side options are limited in the EA but exist if you look carefully

There are choices. Let's take the final quest in EA. You can get all the way to the end of it negotiating with the big bads and not fighting. Now you miss out on some loot doing this but I did it my first run through as I tend to create characters that can talk their way out of a fight. Second time through I wanted to see if I missed any good loot and boy did I...

I'm fairly sure in the full release, there will be adequate quests to engage. Remember, this is essentially beta testing enmasse.

I don't mind linear as long as there are a lot more side quests opened up.  I really like to explore.  I would approve of a monster hunting feature that allows you to travel with the intent on having wandering monster encounters.  For those of us that like to max out our character levels and just the extra combative fun.
