Hello guys, supper newbie here. I was watching the stream of Cohhcarnage on Twitch and was immediately hooked with this game. I have never played any dnd in my life and have to learn a lot of stuff about this kind of game but I must say it is super fun to play.

However, there is a lot of stuff that I cannot understand and don't know where to get more information. For example, can anyone help enlighten me about this situation here?

In this combat, I just cast the Charm spell with +, so that I can target 2 at once. Can someone tell me why da heck are they able to roll Wisdom with advantage? They are a bandit and a highwayman so I assumed that they are not really good with Wis (just common sense guessing). What did I miss in studying the rules? Also, my wizard does not engage in close combat with any of the targets.

The game is really fun but sometimes it is so frustrating of my lack of knowledge about it :((

Hi!

In the basic rules of DnD 5ed, charm spells cast during a combat, against an enemy, are often saved with advantage, reflecting the fact that they are upset with you and your friends and thereby less inclined to fall for your charms ;D

E.g. the Charm person spell, has this rule: "[The target ] must make a Wisdom saving throw, and does so with advantage if you or your Companions are Fighting it. " (From PHB, DnD 5e)

The higher level spell "Hypnotic pattern" does not have this rule, and it is cast over an 30 ft cube-area which makes it a very convenient crowd control spell.
