Graphics go awry when entering/leaving secondary screen

With a frequency varying between none to ~5 times a day (seems to often happen several times within an hour, or not at all for hours), the graphics crash, usually upon entering or leaving a secondary screen (inventory, map, journal etc – rarely happens when loading a game as well). The background goes black and some "snow" (random colored lines/pixels) is displayed (see screen shots). The interface (portraits, buttons) usually/sometimes stays available, and it's usually possible to quick save (F5) and quit after that has happened (sometimes the computer is completely unresponsive for about 30s/1min, but then allows me to quit). When returning to the home screen from that state, the home screen picture is discernable though distorted in a similar fashion (snow). Restarting the game completely restores proper graphics. Note that saves aren't affected by that state.
