Face/Skin Color/Hair options really need to be expanded

It's pretty disappointing that there are no dark skin options, only 3 faces for each race (that are generally very similar), and the same bland styles for hair for everyone. The hair and faces I can live with, but no real dark skinned options was a huge turn off for me (I'd also like to some more fantastical colors for skin as well). Tattoo or scars would be nice too. With the amount of time I've been in cut scenes looking at these characters so far, I really think more customization options would be amazing.

Anyway, so far I'm loving this much more then another game that went into EA very recently ;)

There are different origins if you go Human; Caucasian, Asian and Black I believe. This changes the face options and the skin tones options too.

But there is nothing for the other races. It's boring and lazy to not have options for other ancestries to be something other then white person with pointy ears or short white person with or without a beard.

I more than agree.

I remember seeing it come up a few months earlier on the discord with a question of if including darker skin tones is blackface, and the response to that is not if it's implemented correctly, as in having a diversity of faces that are not all Eurocentric to go with the darker skin tones.

It is disappointing to see a lack of skin colors because as someone who is a person of color with brown skin, I thought it would be nice to have a party comprised of individuals who look like me. I also thought this would be something changed from the demo since it was brought up in the discord server.

In another thread, there was a debate on whether or not the devs should acquiesce in changing their lore, if their lore includes that no one is darker than a paper bag or that elves and the smaller folk can't have brown/dark skin then that should be said. But, I don't think that is the case.

I hope the devs listen and include darker skin tones that go all the way to obsidian, as well as faces resembling different ethnicities for all races but especially elves.

Amazingly, I play fantasy games to play a character that is in no way like me, otherwise it would be a (boring) reality game...

I also play fantasy games to play a character that isn't like myself! Usually she slings spells and drinks health poultices to regain health, and saves the world or two, she just happens to have pretty brown skin. I'm glad you're enjoying the game, Jimmhel :-)!

Thanks Rainlit, I am, I truly am. I probably should have left this thread alone, because the SJW stuff tends to be so divisive, but I am a big fan of established lore. If you deviate too much from it, then it's not the D&D game I came to play anymore. Tall halflings and green dwarves are a bit too far outside the box for me.

Thank you for your comment. I'm a black person who wants to see brown and dark skin in a game, if that makes this a SJW thread then my existence is a SJW plot as well.  I hope the devs add more skin colors and non-Eurocentric faces but hopefully, that won't upset you and others like you too much! Maybe they'll think about adding a toggle where you can only be pale and white?

Like I said, these conversations always get divisive. I never said that there shouldn't be "dark skin", I just left the character creator, and there already is "dark skin". Now, that doesn't mean that I could accurately reproduce a typical person of African descent, which is something I would expect to have implemented, and if that is what you meant, you should have said it plainly. I found the dark skinned facial and skin color options were more akin to Western or Southern Asians (which are not "eurocentric" to borrow your silly euphemism). The humans in D&D have always mirrored "real" humans, which is why I don't prefer playing one. One of my favorite characters won't save anything but his jet black self. Another just never felt comfortable stroking her beard under the open sky. That's the beauty of D&D. I won't be playing him here, though, unless the developers decide to include Drow, or her either, unless they put in beards for the female dwarves. I will however, enjoy the game regardless.

Perhaps I should have been more specific, but as I already stated, I was responding to the other part of the thread where Wepv seemed to lament that fact that the halflings were always short, etc.

But there is nothing for the other races. It's boring and lazy to not have options for other ancestries to be something other then white person with pointy ears or short white person with or without a beard.

This is D&D, where the dwarves are short and stout with beards, and halflings are called that because they are half as tall as a human. Drow are jet black, and Duergar are dark gray. That is the accepted lore; it is as much a part of the game as the ruleset.

The Eurocentric faces I mentioned were referring to elves, fyi & nowhere did the OP state that dwarves or halflings should be taller, so not sure where you’re getting any of that from.

There’s nothing divisive about saying every race should have darker skin tones and different facial features. I forgot how bent people get when "please add skin colors and more diversity" is said, pretty sad, but have a good day :-)!

@rainlit - its like you said that elves should ONLY have black hair and faces instead of just being able to have the OPTION - i guarantee if their lore had elves as default brown with curly hair this guys response would be different, but oh well

The poor quality of choices for faces has been partially sidelined to asking for a need for more black face choices.

While better dark-skinned options would help, the biggest facial improvement would comes in bringing more variety to the SHAPE of faces. Current choices are not only limited but rather unattractive as well, particularly dwarven females. I'm sure it will improve over time, but 'Tactical Adventures' need to get a better artist, both for the existing face choices and any new ones - many people like their characters to look good..... and at this time they do not.

I do understand this is not a big development team, but looks are very important.
