equipping heavy armor on dwarves lowers their movement by 10 feet (2 squares), a penalty if one does not have STR 13/15. However dwarves are exempt from this rule according to 5e SRD. https://www.5esrd.com/races/dwarf/#Dwarf_Traits Race details > Dwarf traits "Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet. Your speed is not reduced by wearing heavy armor."

you are correct. however, SOLASTA's dwarves are, unfortunately, a bit different than SRD.  so to fix things i "cheat" a little and i raised my dwarf's STR to 15 even if i was only going to get 14 from point buy.  that way it will not affect anything other than being able to carry a little be more.  although it was not long before i got some gantlets of ogre strength so it is now a mute point

ah ok thank-you, I didn't realize that aspect deviated from SRD. I should have probably gone STR then on my cleric vs DEX which I usually do for the INIT advantage, Athletics checks and DEX saves. I was trying to play with the Solasta variant weight rule but that plus the heavy armor penalty reduced me to 5 feet of movement lightly encumbered. So I guess I'll go vanilla weight and take the heavy armor penalty when I find some that works better than medium + 2 dex. And thanks for the gauntlets heads up, I was wondering if that was a viable solution too.
