[DLC] Conversation "Dark Secrets" during quest "The Renewal" tanks my Rebellion reputation

Previously, I resolved a conflict between the Rebellion and the Forge by pointing out the mole that had been messing with things. Both sides seemed happy with this information and agreed to unite against Orenetis (conversation: Parlay). Later on, I received a later stage in the Forge's questline ("The Renewal"), and had a conversation with Hasdrubal to discuss it.

At the end of that conversation, my Rebellion relations went from 53 to -70 for no apparent reason, which I'm assuming is a mistake, as it's not clear why taking a quest from one side of a united front would tank the reputation of the other.

I am on the beta branch as part of getting around the issue with the giants turning hostile upon entering their camp.

Yes, I emailed in a bug report. I was told that what's happening is that eventually, if you progress through the Rebellion's quest chain, they ask you to do something in the 'secret lab' area that's the opposite of what the Forge asks you to do. So accepting the Forge's version makes the Rebellion hostile to you, intentionally (and the Rebellion has a similar quest with the same effect on the Forge's reputation).

It's just currently not clear that this is the case, especially if you haven't completed one of the chains far enough to even know these competing requests exist.

Thank you, that was driving me up the wall.  But it kinda sucks that they don't give you the option of choosing a side and merely condemns you for just taking the quest.

It's like they are taking the choice away form you.  You have a dynamic where it might be faction vs. faction, or good vs. evil, or even right vs. wrong.  In the relations between the characters, npc's and world, you are denied the right to choose.  How is that fun?  Or maybe its just a symptom of the world today where it is wrong to hold people accountable for their decisions so Tactical just avoids the issue.
