Crafting magic weapons and armor currently does not tell you what the finished item does. I could forge a Greatsword of Acuteness, but what does it do? Is it even better than what my fighter currently uses? This requires me to just blindly create something that might not be useful for me at all. So I have two suggestions:
1. Preview the finished item with all its mechanics (+1 to hit/damage, cast cantrip upon hit, advantage on con saves etc).
2. Return all ingredients if you abort crafting before it's finished - OR - allow the player to disenchant a crafted item, breaking it down to its components.
Number 2 could be optional, perhaps for an easier difficulty level. But 1 should be in the game for crafting to be attractive.
