Not sure if I am missing something, but I think I've learned flaming sphere twice by now and it still doesn't show up in my preparable spell list.

Turns out your Wizard needs to have a Spellbook item in their bags before learning spells. As far as I can tell this is never explained in the game (on the Spellbook item, the levelup screen or the preparation screen) and is not a requirement for the first 2 levels of spells (??).
This looks suspiciously like a bug, even if it isn't one and if it weren't for some year-old thread I dug up through google I would have never figured this out. The game should seriously hint at requirements like this.
