When I try to cast Mage Armor on my wizard I get a message saying target creature does not have the correct type.

Mage Armor applies only if the recipient isn't wearing any actual armour (made of leather / metal; clothing is okay I believe).
Also, it's possible that your wizard already has Mage Armor cast on.

No, my mage only has adventurer cloths on and does not have the Mage Armor spell cast on her yet.
