We went from having no 5e games, to 2 Solasta and Baldur's Gate 3 coming. I'm wondering is this the beginning of a 5e revolution in CRPG gaming?

If both games are very successful might we see 5e based video games for various 3rd party Setting 5e games like Scarred Lands, Thule, Odyssey of the Draginlords, Arcadia, 5e Numenera, Midguard, ect...?

Tuque Games is also developing a "AAA" DnD 5e game.

There are various 5e games. Especially if we add all the 5e OGL games.

Solasta does seem to be the most accurate with high production values.

I find that Sword Coast Legends is a better Dandy game than some. I mean I enjoyed playing Hillsfar, Demon Stone, and even  Daggerdale, but I wouldn't particularly call any of them a good game.

I heard comments like "missing obvious not work", "spell slots are not intuitive" and "leveling is too slow" from an big producer of BG3, so i lost all interest on it... Sword Coast Legends is the less faithful adaptation an Temple of elemental Evil is the most faithful adaptation. Solasta looks very ToEE like(at least the demo)

Eeeeh, I'm waiting to see what they do with the game before judging. "Missing does not work" is one of those things where it sounds scary, but anyone who played Pathfinder Kingmaker on higher difficulty and ended up missing 15x in a row can understand where the frustration comes from... soooo I'm eagerly waiting for Larian to show us some gameplay! :D

But if you are playing PF:KM on unfair, is expected that enemies will have unfair advantages. On Temple of elemental Evil(ToEE), i did a no reload(except in death/imminent death), no re-roll run and had a Sorcerer with 7 DEX who got diseased and managed to miss 27 times in row, he was without spell slots and we could't even rest for 8 hours without being interrupted. 3.5e had no at will cantrips... But this is not the unique comment. They complained about spell slots too. Casts / rest is used even in Children's Portable games like Pokemon and very action focused games like Dark Souls 1/2.

"We’ve gotten some pushback on some game mechanics,” Mearls admits. “You [indicating Vincke] have talked about how spell slots might not be the most intuitive thing. One of the things with Dungeons and Dragons, which I think is very important, is the method by which we do things is not as important for tabletop players as the actual effect on the table.” https://www.pcgamesn.com/baldurs-gate-3/dungeons-and-dragons-6th-edition

Tuque studios Dark Alliance is an ARPG where you play Drizzt,  hard pass.

I wish Larian Studios communition was as good as TS is.

A bit more information on this, in the Hasbro investor meeting they said that Baldurs gate 3 will be going into Early access this year.

Now that we have a bit of gameplay from BG:3 to look at, what do you all think? I am personally a bit dissappointed in how loose they are on the rules. A lot of stuff changed from action to bonus action, changes to spells (e.g. mage hand being able to attack). It looks like playing DnD with that type of GM that thinks he knows balance so he houserules a ton and just changes the game too much and makes it unintuitive for people who already know the rules.
At the moment it looks less like "DnD: The game" and more like "Divinity 3: Dungeons and Dragons". So I´m happy that (at least in the Demo) it looked like Solasta keeps more to the base-rules.

But what do I know, it´s still very early, maybe theyll change it, maybe they dont and it will be great^^

I wrote quite a bit about BG3 on Discord, but long story short I'm very interested by what they showed!

It does look a lot like Divinity, but it's Larian Studios - that much was to be expected (and it's not necessarily a bad thing). I can understand that some BG fans might be a little disappointed, but I feel like it's shaping up to be an excellent game.

As for changing the rules... I'm actually pretty okay with the changes they made (aside from Mage Hand being that powerful of a cantrip). Moving a few things from action to bonus action helps with the action economy problem that exists in 5e (where some classes don't have a reliable bonus action they can use each turn, making them inherently weaker than classes that can), while also making those moves more usable. When is the last time you sacrificed your action for a shove or a throw? This encourages players to play around with it more often;

Same with shove throwing enemies much further. I won't lie, it looks kind of goofy and a bit too powerful as a bonus action (which is why they'll use Early Access to balance it out), but it makes you want to use it more often (it's rare that enemies will conveniently position right next to a ledge).

Anyway. Super stoked for Baldur's Gate 3, it will be quite a different experience from Solasta - just from the fact that we're tile-based and use individual initiative, combats will shape up very differently (and those are far from being the only differences).

I am looking forward to both games, for similar and different reasons.  BG3 Looks like an amazing experience, but to be honest The Demo for Solasta was the only time i replayed a demo over and over since the demo for DOOM.

The team initiative aspect of BG3 is the one thing in that game better than Solasta. For me, as someone who does not like TB, that is a HUGE improvement of TB combat. In fact, my tabletop D&D group always used to play exactly that way. Essentially it is simultaneous TB combat, and that is exactly what I have been suggesting on the Larian forum and other forums as a good way to improve TB combat and make it less tedious and aggravating.

This is pretty interesting, as most of the worried comments I read was about Team Initiative.

Now don't get me wrong, Team Initiative is very much a common thing in tactical turn-based games (look no further than XCOM and Fire Emblem). As you stated, it allowed for faster gameplay - along with a lot of other advantages, such as being Multiplayer friendly.

That being said, this is where a lot of people start wondering if it's not straying a bit too far from D&D. One bad initiative roll and boom, your entire party is at a disadvantage (there are no initiative rolls in the other games I mentioned). It also takes away from the "individual character" aspect of the game (which is an important part of D&D), since you play as "the squad" instead.

On a personal note, I don't have any strong feeling about this. I've played my fair share of tactical turn-based games, but I also don't think it's a "huge improvement" (just a different type of gameplay, such as TB vs RtwP). That being said if you feel like TB is too slow and tedious, I can totally understand that it makes it a little bit more bearable for you^^

Team initiative seems like something that can be easily abused.

Focus fire and kill the enemy Wizard before he gets a turn.

A group of spellcasters going first can just AoE alpha strike and flatten the entire encounter before combat even starts.

Winning / losing group initiative can probably make some encounters super hard or trivially easy.

I´ve actually seen shove used as an actions, just that because everyone can do it, its a situational thing, and not something you do every turn. Can the first person shove an enemy to knock them prone and give everyone advantage? Thats worth one attack! Is the enemy close to a ledge? Dont need to talk about that one. I think they already said that they will probably put that one back to action since it was really really powerful as a bonus action (especially since they increased the throw distance).
With team ini I must agree with space dog, team initiative is ok as long as its not random who goes first. In fire emblem, xcom or even valkyria chronicles the player NEARLY ALWAYS goes first, also (most of the time) thee enemies are far enough away that there is little combat happening in the first round, most of the time its only for positioning and a few potshots, and even if it isnt, it can be balanced around the fact that the player will probably kill 1 or 2 enemies. Now if it is random AND combatants are close enough to each other to fight, its usually not very hard to knock out a few members of the other team before they even have a chance to act, and that just feels bad as a player. I´ve had a few games where the game allowed the enemy to act first, and theres nothing worse then the enemy killing one of your characters before you even had a chance to do anything. If they stick to it, it will probably only end as a "reload until you win initiative" in difficult fights/higher difficulties. If they really wanna go with group ini, just ditch initiative at all and always let the player go first (unless suprised).

I´m still looking forward to BG3 dont get me wrong, it looks like it will be pretty good, I just hope that there wont be too many small things that give it a sour taste over all.
