Am I an Idiot?

I can't seem to figure out how to throw a javelin. My paladin has had some equipped, but he just won't throw them. Is there something I'm not doing here? Or will a character not throw a thrown weapon at all if they're a certain distance away?

Did you equip them in the second weapon slot?  The first is melee, the second range and the third is light source.

They were, yes.

I feel like you just have to use the "Attack" button while wielding a javelin. You can't use the quick way of attacking where you just click an enemy; that will result in your character moving up to melee them. You have to click the "Attack" button first, then click an enemy at range.

Does this not work?

1) Make sure the javelin is selected on the inventory screen  - if in the second weapon setup, make sure equipped by clicking that setup

2) Click the attack button on the weapon on the main screen to initiate the attack (then click the enemy you want to attack) and it should work.  Also, make sure the enemy is in range; a javelin won't work if they are across the screen.

Lastly, random thought, you don't have to put a "ranged" weapon into the second weapon slot. For characters with good ranged cantrips, I sometimes set up a slashing weapon (sword) in slot one and bludgeoning weapon (hammer) in slot two. Other times, for fun, I do sword & shield in weapon slot one and a two-hander in slot two.

I was just clicking the target I wanted them to attack, not clicking the "attack" button. I didn't know that would make a difference. Thanks for the help!

Why don't spears stack like the javelin? Spears used as a primary based on 5thsrd description.

The option to throw is there right?

I guess spears don't stack because of the rules... and maybe it is odd/difficult to hold 5 spears. Personally, spears should do 1d6 melee, but there is a strong argument (home brew or mod) for 3d6 if thrown (especially with just one-and-done mechanic).
