Aid + Drain = game over?

Hey,

So I've encountered a rare (I assume) issue.

I have a cleric that cast Aid on the party. Aksha (I believe she was called, the vampire) did a few draining hits on the wizard who now has a max hp of 1 until the next long rest. The Aid spell runs out in a few hours before the party can finish the long rest resulting in that character's max hp becoming -4, making it impossible to save him, even with Revivify. This causes me to get a game over as soon as I long rest. I've tried saving, sneaking though, proccing and retrying the Mardracht encounter to get it done without a fight to hopefully find some item that can maybe buy enough time, but to no avail. Also, the cleric has no spell slots or Aid scrolls to cast the spell again.

Is there any way for me to buy some time to get a long rest done? I really like this game but would hate to have to start over again. The solution doesn't have to be in-game, if I can for example edit the wizard's max HP temporarily through game files, that would be fine with me, as long as I can continue this campaign.

Other than that, thanks for creating this game. It's great to be able to play D&D when my friends don't have time ;)

Have a good one!

Similar thing happened to me.. no Aid spell, but a character got drained so that I couldn't revive them.  Their max was permanently -1.

I eventually had to just load the last auto-save and try again.

If you want some hints on the fight:

One thing I can't stress enough: make sure you're level 5 before you start the fight.  There's a place you can do a long rest on the floor below -- well worth it to go and level up, or just make sure you've got all your spell slots and special abilities recharged.  The power gap between levels 4 and 5 in D&D is huge and it makes this fight SO much easier if you're level 5.  Also, if anyone has the new Shine cantrip, use it often on the vamps.  It does radiant damage to them every turn as long as they fail their WIS saving through.

If you haven't discovered it yet, you can knock out the boards covering the windows along the left side of the room to let in some light.  (Just attack them with an arrow or cantrip that does damage.)  Then, "stay in the light" as the NPCs keep telling you. ;)

Aksha regens, so I find that it's generally useful to focus fire on one of the adds to kill it, then the do the same for the other helper.  Once they're both dead, then deal with Aksha.  In the meantime, do everything you can to keep the place lit up and when she casts Darkness, get out of it.

The 3rd level Cleric spell "Spirit Guardians" is very useful here (and in other places).

Thanks for the advice, but I already won the fight and all my saves, including autosaves, are from after that fight so there's no going back for me it seems.

It kind of looks like you're stuck :( On our end we are aware of the 0 HP drain game over (and we're working on a fix), but there is no solution in the current version aside from loading an older save. I've gotta say the interaction with the Aid spell is interesting to say the least, I'll forward that to the programmers.

I had this as well - critically drained to 0 max HP.

I skillfully beat this at level 4 by making all my con saves against the drain (eventually). I also abused Aksha's AI - if she camped in the darkness to heal she would be unbeatable but she comes out & gets hit by readied attacks.

I did not try shooting out the boards (which makes no sense) but did try interacting or meleeing them and well you can't.

As Chris.clark says the power spike in 5e is massive from 4 to 5 level. It will be impossible to make this encounter balanced so that it is challenging at 5th level and not very frustrating at 4th. The fact you can travel to farm XP probably needs mentioning about here.

There is a repeat of this fight later at 6th level with more magic items which cost me all of 5 hp and a couple of spells. That encounter could do with some buffing up - more minions and less light for starters.

Thanks for your answer. Would you advice me to wait for a fix or just start over? Since I discovered this problem kind of late, all my saves are from after the Aksha fight.

Wait, there is a way to ready attacks in the game?  I looked for this option and couldn't find it!

How do you ready an attack?

During a friendly character's turn, it should be in the bar with the other possible actions (like Attack,Cast a spell, Disengage etc)
