advice for unwinnable fight

2 years ago (edited)

Hi, first post.  I'm new to DD games, but have played a lot of DOS.   I like to challenge myself by not doing any save/loads nor using Revivify scrolls... if Im dead I start over.   For me, its more fun.  Anyways, I finally got to where the gem fits into the crown, then I see this perplexing cutscene where I play as an unknown champion vs what seems like an unlimited number of Soraks coming thru a kind of dimensional portal.   Needless to say, I died, and its back to square one.   *Sigh*

I dont see how this battle can be won.  I dont want to put another 3 hours or so into the game and be stuck in a loop, cus this battle CANT be won.  What's the deal with this?

Thanks for your advice.

I didn't try to win it, I just tried to survive it.

Can I ask you you survived it then?  Seeing this for the first time, I tried to fight, but is the answer to disengage (there are 3 of them right next to you when it starts) and run to an exit?   Is there an exit?

So you will roll eighteen petty much every attack with that dude so just make sure your hits are going where they need to do since missing isn't an issues. Cast Armor of Faith as an extra action first or second round, the bonus to your AC makes a big difference. Kill the cleric before it gets a turn because once it is is airborne you are stuck with it, kill all the little things instead of wasting your attacks on the big dudes. I would clear everything but the big guys every round and even managed to take down two of them before it all ended. Think I had somewhere between half and three quarters health after the five or so rounds that combat lasts

The battle last for only like 4 rounds.  The Paladin that you are playing as can heal himself for something like 50 HP with his Lay on Hands ability.  Using your movement to head to a corner where only 2-3 enemies can attack you in melee is quite effective.  I usually focus my attacks on the lower HP foes who come in melee range & can be dispatched with fewer attacks. I’ve never had a problem with this strategy since I tried it - in my first attempt AFTER my first failed attempt. 😉

Oh I see, so there are only 5 or so rounds before something stops the combat action?   Thank you Cody!

Thank you Paul, that is an excellent tactic.   I get it now, I thought it was a battle to the end and was wondering: what the **** is this?  ;)

Suggestion A:

Round 1: Disengage (if anyone next to you), move to bottom right corner.

Round 2+: Cast Shield of Faith (+2AC), Dodge as action gong forward, heal if necessary...  walk in the park even on Cataclysm.

Suggestion B:

Round 1: Disengage (in anyone next to you), move to bottom right corner.

Round 2: Cast Shield of Faith (+2AC)

Round 3+: Do not move, kill anything next to you, targeting casters and infiltrators next.  Warriors/beasts have lots of HP and are a waste of DPR... ignore them and only attack if no other targets.

I think the battle is winnable on Standard or Scavenger difficulty, also Cataclysm possible  with save scumming... wish there was a mod for 7ish rounds of spawns (14 vs. 1) and then unlimited time to see winner :). Probably fairly easy to replicate with dungeon maker.

Everybody's advice here is great.  I'm surprised I didn't think of any of this stuff.  I just roleplayed like a true Paladin & cast Shield of Faith & proceeded to slay everything that came through the gate.  Obviously I couldn't keep up with the mobs but was able to survive no problem by casting Lay on Hands once I got low on hit points once towards the end of the fight.  I have to admit, I was starting to get worried, wondering how I was going to survive the endless mobs, but then just as I was about to lose hope, the vision ended.  I survived.

This was my tactic, exactly.

Use shield of faith, use the dodge action every round and use your hasted action to attack the weakest enemy every round.
